Active vs Passive: When to Use Each

Using both Active and Passive voice is essential for a high Grammatical Range score. But it's not just about grammar rules; it's about focus.
The voice you choose tells the reader what is important in the sentence.
1. Active Voice: "Who did it?"
In active sentences, the Subject (the doer) is the star.
- •Structure: Subject + Verb + Object.
- •Example: "The government built the new road."
- •When to use:
- •Writing Task 2 (Opinions): "I believe that..."
- •Speaking (Personal stories): "My father taught me..."
- •When you want to be direct and clear.
- •
2. Passive Voice: "What happened?"
In passive sentences, the Object (the receiver) is the star. The doer is often unknown or unimportant.
- •Structure: Object + To Be + V3 (Past Participle) (+ by Doer).
- •Example: "The new road was built (by the government)."
- •When to use:
- •Writing Task 1 (Process Diagrams): This is mandatory! When describing how coffee is made, the coffee doesn't do anything; things happen to it.
- •"The beans are picked." "The coffee is dried." "It is packed."
- •
- •Writing Task 2 (Formal/General statements): To sound more objective.
- •Active: "People should reduce pollution." (A bit simple).
- •Passive: "Pollution should be reduced." (More academic/objective).
- •
- •
3. How to Switch
- •Active: "Tourists litter the beach."
- •Passive: "The beach is littered by tourists."
4. The Trap: Overusing Passive
Don't use passive voice for everything. It can make sentences clunky and hard to read.
- •Bad: "A good time was had by me." (Unnatural).
- •Good: "I had a good time."
Conclusion
Think of Active and Passive as camera lenses. Do you want to focus on the person (Active) or the result/action (Passive)?
- •Task 1 Process: Passive is King.
- •Task 2 Essay: Mix both. Use Passive for general solutions ("Laws should be passed") and Active for your opinion ("I agree").
