No More Surprises: IELTS Test Format at a Glance

Fear comes from the unknown. The best way to beat exam anxiety is to know the test format inside out. When you know exactly what happens next, you can focus 100% of your energy on finding the right answers.
Here is the IELTS test structure at a glance, so you face no surprises on test day.
Total Test Time: Approx. 2 hours 45 minutes
You take Listening, Reading, and Writing in one sitting without breaks. Speaking is taken separately.
1. Listening (30 Minutes)
- •Format: 4 Sections (Recordings), 40 Questions.
- •Content:
- •Section 1: A conversation between two people in an everyday social context (e.g., booking a hotel).
- •Section 2: A monologue in an everyday social context (e.g., a speech about local facilities).
- •Section 3: A conversation between up to four people in an educational/training context (e.g., a university tutor and student).
- •Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject (e.g., a university lecture).
- •
- •Key Tip: The recording is played once only. You must listen, read, and write simultaneously.
2. Reading (60 Minutes)
- •Format: 3 Sections, 40 Questions.
- •Content:
- •Academic: Three long, complex texts from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers.
- •General Training: Section 1 contains two or three short factual texts. Section 2 contains two short work-related texts. Section 3 contains one longer text of general interest.
- •
- •Key Tip: There is no extra time to transfer answers. You must write your answers directly onto the answer sheet within the 60 minutes.
3. Writing (60 Minutes)
- •Format: 2 Tasks.
- •Content:
- •Task 1 (20 mins, 150 words): Academic candidates describe a visual (graph, chart, diagram). General Training candidates write a letter.
- •Task 2 (40 mins, 250 words): Both candidates write a discursive essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.
- •
- •Key Tip: Task 2 is worth double the marks of Task 1. Manage your time accordingly!
4. Speaking (11-14 Minutes)
- •Format: Face-to-face interview.
- •Content:
- •Part 1 (4-5 mins): Introduction and interview (questions about you, home, family, interests).
- •Part 2 (3-4 mins): Long turn. You are given a topic card and have 1 minute to prepare, then speak for up to 2 minutes.
- •Part 3 (4-5 mins): Discussion. The examiner asks broader, more abstract questions related to the Part 2 topic.
- •
- •Key Tip: Fluency and coherence are key. Don't worry about "right" or "wrong" opinions; worry about expressing them clearly.
Conclusion
Knowing the format helps you pace yourself. You won't be shocked when the difficulty increases in Listening Section 4, or when you have to switch gears for Writing Task 2. Study the structure, practice with a timer, and eliminate the surprises.
