Paraphrasing Toolkit: Say It Differently

Paraphrasing—expressing the same meaning using different words—is the secret weapon of high scorers. It is essential for the Writing introduction, essential for showing understanding in Reading, and vital for fluency in Speaking.
If you just copy words from the question, the examiner assumes you don't know any other words. Here is your toolkit for paraphrasing effectively.
Tool 1: Synonyms (The Classic)
Replace a word with one that means the same thing.
- •Original: "The graph shows..."
- •Paraphrase: "The chart illustrates..."
- •Original: "Computers are important."
- •Paraphrase: "Computers are essential."
- •Warning: Ensure the synonym has the exact same meaning in that context.
Tool 2: Change the Word Form
Keep the root word but change it from a verb to a noun, or an adjective to a verb.
- •Original: "Consumption of sugar increased." (Verb)
- •Paraphrase: "There was an increase in sugar consumption." (Noun)
- •Original: "The city is beautiful." (Adjective)
- •Paraphrase: "The beauty of the city is notable." (Noun)
Tool 3: Change the Sentence Structure
Flip the sentence from Active to Passive voice.
- •Original: "The government should invest more money in schools." (Active)
- •Paraphrase: "More money should be invested in schools by the government." (Passive)
- •Why it works: It shows grammatical flexibility, which boosts your Grammar score.
Tool 4: Change the Perspective (Antonyms)
Say the opposite of the opposite.
- •Original: "The test was difficult."
- •Paraphrase: "The test was not easy."
- •Original: "The prices are cheap."
- •Paraphrase: "The prices are inexpensive."
Conclusion
Paraphrasing isn't just about avoiding repetition; it's about showing the examiner that you have command over the English language. Practice rewriting essay prompts using these four tools, and watch your Vocabulary score climb.
