Punctuation Power: Don’t Lose Points Over Commas!

Punctuation counts towards your "Grammatical Range and Accuracy" score in Writing. Poor punctuation makes your essay hard to read. If the examiner has to re-read your sentence three times to understand where it ends, your Coherence score drops too.
Here are the essential punctuation rules for IELTS.
1. The Full Stop (Period) [.]
It seems obvious, but many students write "Run-on sentences"—sentences that go on forever without stopping.
- •Rule: One idea = One sentence. When the idea is finished, use a full stop.
- •Tip: If you run out of breath reading your sentence aloud, it's too long. Break it into two.
2. The Comma [,]
Commas tell the reader to pause. They are crucial for complex sentences.
- •Linking Words: Always use a comma after transition words at the start of a sentence.
- •"However, this is not always true."
- •"Firstly, we must consider the cost."
- •
- •If/Although Clauses:
- •If the clause comes first, use a comma.
- •"Although it rained**,** we went out."
- •
- •If the clause comes second, NO comma.
- •"We went out although it rained."
- •
- •
- •Lists: "I bought apples, bananas**,** and pears."
3. The Apostrophe [']
This little mark causes big headaches.
- •Contraction (Missing letters):
- •Don't = Do not. Can't = Cannot.
- •IELTS Rule: Avoid contractions in Academic Writing Task 1 and 2. Use "Do not," not "Don't." It is more formal.
- •
- •Possession (Ownership):
- •"The student**'s** book" (One student).
- •"The students**'** books" (Many students).
- •Trap: "It's" = "It is". "Its" = Possession (The cat ate its food).
- •
4. Capital Letters [ABC]
- •Start of sentence: Always.
- •Proper Nouns: Names of people (John), cities (London), countries (China), languages (English), days (Monday), months (July).
- •Trap: Do not capitalize seasons (summer, winter) or university subjects (economics, history) unless it is the name of a specific course (Economics 101).
Conclusion
Punctuation is the traffic signal system of your writing. It tells the reader when to stop, go, and turn. Master these simple signals to ensure your examiner enjoys a smooth ride through your essay.
