If you use the exact same structure for every IELTS essay, you are gambling with your score. A "Problems/Solutions" essay needs a completely different approach than an "Opinion" essay.
To get a Band 7+ for Task Response, you must answer the specific prompt. Here are the 5 main essay types and how to tackle them.
1. Opinion Essay (Agree/Disagree)
•
The Prompt: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?"
•
The Structure:
•
Intro: State your opinion clearly (Thesis).
•
Body 1: Reason 1 why you agree/disagree.
•
Body 2: Reason 2 why you agree/disagree (OR acknowledge the other side and refute it).
•
Conclusion: Restate your opinion.
•
Tip: You don't have to be 50/50. It is often easier to agree 100% or disagree 100%.
2. Discussion Essay (Both Views)
•
The Prompt: "Discuss both views and give your own opinion."
•
The Structure:
•
Intro: Mention both sides. State your opinion.
•
Body 1: Discuss View A (even if you hate it).
•
Body 2: Discuss View B (and why you prefer it).
•
Conclusion: Summarize and restate opinion.
•
Tip: You MUST discuss both sides equally. If you ignore one side, you lose marks.
3. Advantages & Disadvantages
•
The Prompt: "What are the advantages and disadvantages?"
•
The Structure:
•
Intro: State that there are pros and cons.
•
Body 1: The Advantages.
•
Body 2: The Disadvantages.
•
Conclusion: Summarize. (You can give an opinion if asked "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?").
4. Problem & Solution / Cause & Solution
•
The Prompt: "What are the causes? What solutions can you suggest?"
•
The Structure:
•
Intro: Paraphrase the problem.
•
Body 1: The Causes (or Problems).
•
Body 2: The Solutions.
•
Conclusion: Summarize.
•
Tip: Make sure your solutions actually solve the problems you mentioned in Body 1!
5. Two-Part Question (Double Question)
•
The Prompt: "Why is this happening? Is this a positive or negative development?"
•
The Structure:
•
Intro: Answer both questions briefly.
•
Body 1: Answer Question 1.
•
Body 2: Answer Question 2.
•
Conclusion: Summarize both answers.
•
Tip: Don't forget one of the questions!
Conclusion
Before you write a single word, identify the essay type. This tells you exactly how to organize your paragraphs. One size does not fit all—choose the right fit for the task.
