The Ultimate IELTS Exam Day Checklist

The night before your IELTS exam, your mind should be on resting, not panicking about whether you forgot something. Logistics issues are the last thing you need on test day.

Use this ultimate checklist to ensure you arrive at the test center calm, collected, and ready to succeed.

What to Bring (Essential)

  1. ID Document: This is non-negotiable. You must bring the exact same passport or ID card you used to register. If you forget it, you will not be allowed to sit the test and you will lose your fee.
  2. Water: A transparent bottle of water. Remove the label. Stay hydrated, but don't drink too much (bathroom breaks waste time!).
  3. Stationery (Paper-based only):
    • HB Pencils (bring 2 or 3, sharpened).
    • Eraser (remove the paper sleeve).
    • Sharpener.
    • Note: For Computer-delivered IELTS, paper and pencils are provided for notes.
  4. Warm Clothing: Exam halls can be freezing cold or too hot. Wear layers (e.g., a t-shirt and a zip-up hoodie) so you can adjust your temperature.

What NOT to Bring

  1. Phone/Smartwatch: Electronic devices are strictly forbidden. You will have to leave them in a locker outside. If a phone rings in your pocket during the test, you will be disqualified.
  2. Valuables: Leave unnecessary expensive items at home.
  3. Correction Fluid/Tape: This is not allowed. If you make a mistake, just cross it out (Paper-based).

The Night Before

  • Sleep: Aim for at least 7-8 hours. Your brain needs rest to function at high speed for 3 hours.
  • Plan Your Route: Check exactly where the test center is and how long it takes to get there. Add 30 minutes for traffic/delays.
  • Set Two Alarms: Don't risk oversleeping.

The Morning Of

  • Eat Breakfast: It's a long test (approx. 2 hours 45 minutes without a break). Eat a slow-release energy breakfast (oats, eggs, toast) to keep your focus sharp.
  • Warm Up: Listen to a podcast or read an article in English on your way to the center. Wake up your "English brain" before the test starts.
  • Arrive Early: Arrive at least 45 minutes before the start time for check-in procedures (fingerprint, photo, ID check).

During the Test

  • Check the Audio: At the start of the Listening test, check your headphones immediately. If there is static or the volume is low, raise your hand instantly.
  • Bathroom Breaks: There are no breaks between Listening, Reading, and Writing. If you need to go, you must go during the test time (Reading or Writing), which means you lose time. Go before the test starts!

Conclusion

Being prepared logistically reduces stress. When you aren't worrying about your pencil or being late, you can focus 100% of your energy on answering the questions. Pack your bag tonight, sleep well, and go get that score!
